Airbnb has opened up a whole new world for travelers. My first experience booking an Airbnb was in the Latin Quarter of Paris of all places. I could have booked a fancy hotel, but living in an apartment for a week, listening to the chatter of diners at the restaurant tables below while a ton (a ton!) of cigarette smoke rose up to my balcony gave me a vastly different experience of being in the city. I felt like a local. I bought my baguette and red wine and put them in an actual kitchen that was all mine to use. I had a “host” nearby who could offer me his personalized recommendations in this corner of the world that he knew best. Not only have short-term rentals opened up a new world for those wanting to see the world, but they’ve also opened up a whole new revenue source for big-time investors and property managers and for the average homeowner alike—the single mom who needs another revenue source in the form of passive income or the parent who needs extra savings for their child’s college fund.
